Observation Narrative
A moderately mature floodplain forest with Quercus lyrata dominating and some Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Taxodium distichum, and Nyssa aquatica also present in the canopy. The shrub layer is open and herb layer is composed of dense graminoids (mostly Leersia lenticularis and sedges). There are areas of bare leaf litter, in small depressions that hold water for part of the year. Cypress knees are about 0.8 m tall. The site is on a broad, low, winter-flooded terrace about 300 m from the main channel of the Nottoway River.
